Featured Artist Interview: Ministry of Shiny

Google

"There are things other than jewellery, I hear. I don't quite believe it, but that's what they say.
I started making jewellery in 2004, I've got special love for metal clay, and especially silver, though I'm experimenting with copper at the moment. I'm also having a go at bead weaving, both on and off loom. That's a bit little comparing apples and giraffes, they're quite different.
When I'm not in my jewellery making tower, I teach English, run a Brownie group (girls not cakes) study linguistics, and try to travel as much as I can.
I love gemstones and matching and contrasting different textures and colors. I hope you like my shiny things and if you'd like something extra specially shiny just for you, do contact me and I'll do my best for you."

Shop Name: Ministry of Shiny

What you like to go by: Abbie

When did you start your shop? On Etsy in November 2011

Is this your only job? No, I teach English as a foreign language, and I'm studying for a Masters in Applied Linguistics.

When did you realize you had this talent? I've always liked making things, and my mum also makes jewellery. A friend got me into bead weaving about eight years ago and I decided to take a silversmith class. I enjoyed it so much, I bought some materials, then mum lent me her equipment and I was away!

Where do you find your inspiration? I love seeing where the materials take me, and using a basic technique to develop into something more complicated and spectacular.

Who has been the most supportive of your work? Family and friends, I made my sister's wedding jewellery and my mum gets me to repair her old jewellery.

What is one thing you would like to accomplish that you haven't yet? Selling out of stock!

What are your other hobbies? I am a Brownie Guide leader (girl's group for ages 7-10) They're great fun. Guiding has taken me to Japan, Mexico and Switzerland and I've met some of the best people in the world.
What are your words to live by or favorite quote? Be the change you want to see in the world, Gandhi I think.

Where is the farthest you have traveled? I live in the UK, so the furthest I've been is Japan (12 hours on the plane) Japan is awesome, I loved it and I cannot wait to go back. Japan is also an inspiration as that's where metal clay was developed, a material I use a lot. I tried a lot of traditional crafts when I was there, including my first go on a full size fabric loom. It's inspiring to blend the traditional and modern as you find in Japan.

Have a look at my blog and my Folksy shop has different things!

What you like to go by:
My real name is Sarah but I have a few persona's namely 'Miss Bea' for my jewellery collection and vintage fashion blog missbeawants.wordpress.com/) and 'Workingberlinmum' for my personal blog that I write (workingberlinmum.blogspot.com/)

When did you start your shop?
I opened my Etsy shop very recently, at the end of September, but I have been making and selling jewellery through other resources since the beginning of the year.

Is this your only job?
More info
At the moment I am studying German 6 hours a day and I also do a bit of paid freelance photography work and a bit of writing on the side. I hope to build my jewelry business up to the point that it can be my main source of income but that will take a while.

When did you realize you had this talent?
I've always been a lover of jewellery, especially earrings and people would often comment on what I wore. At some point I just thought, hey, why don't I invest in a few tools and have a go at making some myself?! That started off a big passion in me and I have never looked back. I love making jewelery and adore the thought that great women are walking around wearing my pieces!

Where do you find your inspiration?
I love all things vintage, especially the 50's, 60's and 70's. I take inspiration from those era's, the jewelery around at the time, the colors, the shapes and I use a lot of genuine vintage beads.

More info
Who has been the most supportive of your work?
A couple of people helped me out with a bit of a financial start up to get the first rounds of stock and tools that I need to get me up and running and I am very appreciative of that. My boyfriend knows I am a bit of a workaholic and I would happily spend 11 hours a day making new pieces, photographing them and putting them online and he has been very understanding of my need to constantly check my shop!

What is one thing you would like to accomplish that you haven't yet?
I dream of opening my own shop here in Berlin where I am based and I am working towards that. I would still keep the online element so that I can sell worldwide, but to have my own bricks and mortar shop would be a dream come true!

What are your words to live by or favorite quote?
''I walk slowly but I never walk backwards'', a quote from Abraham Lincoln. I have this quote tattooed on me and it acts as a reminder to always keep moving forward and to think as I go.

Shop Name: Lipgloss and Black

What you like to go by: You can call us Sylvia and Samantha or "Syl and Sam" for short.

When did you start your shop? We started our business in 2004 on Livejournal, got a little more serious and sold on eBay for a few years & then opened our Etsy shop in 2008

Is this your only job? Yes! Both of us are working full time trying to grow our business.

More info
When did you realize you had this talent? We both grew up in a creative environment where we found ourselves coloring or crafting as a hobby. Our mom taught us how to alter clothes at a young age & we were interested in getting creative with it. We never saw sewing as a special talent or anything, it was more like learning an important life skill. We both taught ourselves the basics of clothing construction and Samantha actually went to College for Fashion Techniques and Design.

Where do you find your inspiration? We find our inspiration everywhere from magazines to the streets. We love seeing what pop and rock stars wear on stage and try to take small elements from stage outfits to implement into the everyday clothes we make.

More info
Who has been the most supportive of your work? Our customers have been so supportive of us since day one. Even when we have doubts about our skill or creativity, they are there to support us with their words or by buying our pieces. We are always thrilled to find new customers and it's amazing when people tell us they've been following us since we started in 2004!

What is one thing you would like to accomplish that you haven't yet? Although we seem like an old business, we're only in our first year of operating full time. We hope only to succeed as a full time fashion business and to be able to survive by doing what we're passionate about.

What are your words to live by or favorite quote? No specific quotes or anything, we just want girls to wear what makes them feel happy & to know that it isn't too hard to do-it-yourself, sometimes!
