No-Sew Colored Pencil Roll
For me, summer and sewing don't seem to mix. I've got a lot going on in the garden, it's hot in my garage (AKA sewing studio), the little one isn't wearing much clothing anyway ... the list of excuses is a mile long. But there's good news, my anti-sewing attitude led me to a cool + easy craft!
I put together a little tutorial in case you want to make one. Coupled with a sketch book (or these awesome blank books) it makes a very nice gift. I made this one for my favorite seven year old.
No-Sew Colored Pencil Roll Tutorial
Materials:
1/3 yard of wool or wool blend felt
1 yard of leather cord
exacto knife
ruler
disappearing fabric marker or tailors chalk
self healing mat (optional but helpful)
24 colored pencils
* Optional Step 1: Thicken your felt: Wash it in hot water, and put it in the dryer until almost dry, iron.
* Optional Step 2: Download Pencil roll pattern to make the whole thing more clear.
1. Cut your felt into a rectangle 9"x33" (or 26" if you don't want the extra felt that wraps around at the end).
2. Using a ruler mark one row of 24 dashes that are 1/2" long and 1/2" apart starting 3" from the bottom (long side) of your felt and 1" from the edge (9" side). Mark another row of identical dashes 1/2" above the first.
3. Repeat with the top. Using a ruler mark one row of 24 dashes that are 1/2" long and 1/2" apart starting 3" from the top (long edge) of your felt and 1" from the short edge. Mark another row of identical dashes 1/2" below the first.
4. Using an exacto knife, cut along the dashes to create slits where the pencils will slide through.
5. Attach the cord by cutting a small hole 1" in from and halfway up the far edge. Fold the cord in half, tie a loop knot, thread the two loose ends through the hole.
6. Fill your roll with pencils, roll it up, wrap the cord around, tie, and enjoy!
